Glad to see Spring arriving and hoping you and the horses are all doing well. Hoping all goes well with that hip and take it easy on a slow and careful recovery. Betcha will be good as new after that!

Thanks for asking mares. Can't wait, the pain is getting old. Consultation in Boston is April 6, actual replacement? He's in demand.

When I had my knee done the first time the wait was 8 weeks. The second knee was 14 weeks. Some are much more in demand than others but the result is worth getting the best doctor for the job. Best of luck. I hear hips are easier than knees. What hospital are you going to ?

I think a couple of months out isn't unusual for the good ones....worth the wait for sure. Sorry that you are so uncomfortable Bill...I know exactly how you feel. You'll be amazed when you get a new one!!!!!!

Unfortunately I am mares, LOL! But it was all worth it. The doctor who did mine is amazing....I am hoping he is still practicing when I need the other one done. Just a smart, kind, down to earth talented doctor who is a bit of a Guru when it comes to hips. I was very fortunate.

Bill or jc, what is the recovery period for a new hip? Is tbere lots of pt with it? Maybe Bill's caring for his horses and property is pt enough. :-) Will be nice to have this behind you.

It's fairly quick as far as living and doing light stuff. I was back to work in 6 weeks, walking well pretty much right away. I think I used a cane for a week. I didn't do PT as my husband is one but the doctor just told me to move it like normal and if it hurt don't do that.

Yikes Bill. QT is quite thin. When I got my old mare back I fed her 2nd cut, which you do too I believe? And also did a senior feed with soaked beetpulp, flax and rice bran. You could split it up and feed it to her multiple times a day in your feed bag that you use. As they age they don't pull the same level of nutrients from their feed that they used to so you have to add more. The pasture helps for sure.

I'll give her a month on this pasture along with her senior extruded grain twice a day. She's been wormed and teeth done. She's pushing 31, no health issues and sound, just not filled out as she once was. I'll show her again in a month.

Here is an interesting article on weight gain in older horses. https://thehorse.com/136633/helping-old-horses-gain-weight-before-winter/

Also here is a great equine dental specialist that really turned my senior mare around. I would be having constant chokes if it wasn't for her good work and also got weight gain after her work. http://www.nevds.com/

Older horses can get EOTRH. This can become a very painful condition for affected horses and can result in weight loss, attitude changes, and discomfort in the bridle. We know that both periodontal disease and dental abscesses are painful, and this syndrome causes a significant degree of both, with usually multiple teeth affected. Horses are quite stoic and adapt to this chronic pain, it is typically not until the pain is gone (when the affected teeth are extracted) that we realize how much it was affecting them.

My horse did not have this, but she did have a lot of sharp points digging into her cheek. I have Dr. Limone once a year but if I start having problems with my senior I call her out earlier and she is better after each treatment. She is a horse dentist genius!! She is out of Topsfield, MA.

Just a few ideas...

That grass should definitely help Bill. Are you feeding more of the extruded than usual grain because it's lighter in weight and so you need to feed more of it. Hopefully she'll fill out before the snows come. Good luck!!
Also, I know you blanketed her last year, but if you need any extras I have some I don't use, you can have.

My 24 yo quarter horse started losing some weight this summer. He is on Triple Crown Senior, 2'nd cut hay and I started giving him soaked hay cubes 50/50 timothy and alfalfa twice a day. He loves it and I am happy to say he is gaining some weight back!

I didn't watch all of the video, so I thought JC was joking about the skeleton horse, love they your horse were looking at it! Sometimes no matter what you do they get old and skinny.

I think the extruded grain is like most senior grains nutrition wise but it might be easier for them to chew. It's lighter, so by volume it's not the same, it should be weighed.
Thank you for the offer JC. I had a blanket on her last night with a cold rain falling.
Age catches up to all of us eventually.
